May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time when we come together to celebrate the rich history, culture, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This month-long event offers an opportunity to delve into the diverse and complex stories of the AAPI community and recognize their immense contributions to American society.

The History of AAPI Month

But what is AAPI month all about? When did it start, and why do we celebrate it? We can trace its roots back to 1977 when Congress members Frank Horton and Norman Y. Mineta introduced a resolution to proclaim the first ten days of May as "Asian/Pacific Heritage Week." The month of May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad built mostly by Chinese laborers on May 10, 1869. It was eventually extended into a month-long event in 1990, and in 1992 saw Congress pass an additional law that annually designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.

Why We Celebrate AAPI Month

There are many reasons to celebrate AAPI month, a list that has only grown over time as the Asian American population continues to burgeon. Here are a couple that are at top-of-mind as of 2023:

  1. Recognizing the ongoing contributions of AAPI communities. AAPI month serves as a platform to honor the immense contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the United States' social, economic, and cultural fabric. The AAPI community's achievements in various fields, including science, technology, arts, and business, have significantly shaped American society.
  2. Addressing the Challenges of a Growing Population. The Asian American population is among the fastest-growing racial and ethnic groups in the United States. With this rapid growth comes a need to address the unique challenges faced by the AAPI community, such as representation in politics, media, and the workforce. AAPI month serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of these issues and advocate for policies that promote greater inclusion and equity.
  3. Acknowledging the Struggles of AAPI Communities during COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a rise in anti-Asian sentiment, hate crimes, and discrimination. AAPI month provides an opportunity to acknowledge these challenges and reaffirm our commitment to fighting against hate and prejudice. By remembering and understanding these struggles, we can foster empathy and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
  4. Embracing Diversity and Promoting Inclusion. AAPI month helps raise awareness of the rich and diverse cultures that make up the AAPI community. By promoting understanding and appreciation of these cultures, we can create a more inclusive society and break down stereotypes and misconceptions about AAPI individuals.
  5. Celebrating the Growing Influence of Asian Culture. Asian culture is becoming increasingly mainstream, with more people embracing Asian cuisine, fashion, entertainment, and art. AAPI month offers a platform to celebrate this cultural fusion and the unique ways in which the AAPI community has enriched American life. Now is an especially poignant time to celebrate the rise of Asian culture, with Michelle Yeoh winning the Academy Award for Best Actress and the dominance of K-Pop groups like BTS and BlackPink in mainstream media.
  6. Building Community and Solidarity. AAPI month fosters a sense of community and solidarity among AAPI individuals and their allies, allowing them to come together to share stories, celebrate achievements, and address common challenges.
