Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Kyoto, Japan, with this elegant and sophisticated matcha cocktail, the Matcha Whisky Highball. This green tea-infused drink perfectly blends the earthy flavors of matcha with the bold warmth of whisky, making it an ideal choice for those who appreciate the finer things in life and wish to experience a taste of Japanese culture.

Matcha has been garnering attention as a key ingredient in various culinary creations, including the latest trend in sophisticated cocktails. Its potential health benefits, unique flavor, and vivid color make it an appealing addition to any drink, elevating the overall experience with a touch of elegance and class.

  • 45ml of Whisky (we recommend a good Japanese whisky like Mars Iwai)
  • 60ml of Matcha Honey Syrup
  • 45ml of Lemon Juice
  • Soda Water to finish
  • Cinnamon Stick, Dried Plum, and Star Anise to garnish

For Matcha Honey Syrup (makes 6 servings):

  • 200g of Clover Honey
  • 100g of Granulated Sugar
  • 70g of Water
  • 15g of Matcha Powder
  • 5 Cloves, 1 Cinnamon Stick, 1 Star Anise

  1. Combine the Matcha Honey Syrup ingredients in a small pot over heat then let cool.
  2. Add Whisky, Matcha Honey Syrup, and Lemon Juice to a shaker, fill with ice, then cap and shake vigorously while looking calm and collected.
  3. Prepare a standard highball glass and fill it with ice.
  4. Use the shaker's strainer (or a Hawthorne Strainer) to fill your glass 3/4 full with the mixture.
  5. Top the glass with club soda, then use a bar spoon to gently lift the ice in the glass a little allow the soda water to mix properly.

On a peaceful evening, the bartender prepares for another quiet night at his bar. He's content with the calm atmosphere, and his regulars appreciate the serene ambiance after their long workdays. It's the perfect setting for indulging in elegant matcha cocktails.

As the bartender checks the spice jars lining the counter, he notices some are nearly empty. A trip to Nishiki Market will be necessary in the morning to replenish his supplies. He recalls a time when his only concept of spice was the ubiquitous red can of S&B Curry Powder found in every Japanese home. Nowadays, he experiments with exotic spices like star anise, cinnamon, and clove to infuse his spirits. He pulls out a small tin box from under the counter and shakes it gently. Satisfied with the amount of matcha inside, he decides he won't need to call back home to Uji, where the finest matcha is grown and ground, just yet.

As the sun sets, its golden rays reflect off the shaker on the counter. The bartender takes out a highball glass and places three ice cubes inside. He pours a measure of whisky, tops it with chilled soda water, and skillfully swirls a bar spoon through the amber liquid. The classic Highball comes to life, with tiny bubbles rising to the surface. Stepping outside, Highball in hand, the bartender breathes in the fresh evening air and watches as the small sign beside the front door flickers to life. Another tranquil night awaits.

The Matcha Whisky Highball is a prime example of the elegance and sophistication that matcha cocktails bring to the table. Its exquisite blend of green tea and whisky offers a refined drinking experience that pays homage to the rich culture and traditions of Kyoto. Whether you're hosting a high-end event or simply looking to indulge in a classy drink with a touch of Japanese influence, the Matcha Whisky Highball is sure to impress.
